We have learned a lot about technology and assessments in class.  The picture below represents how some feel about the role that technology will play in our students' lives.  Analyze the picture paying attention to the image and the words at the bottom.  When you have finished, scroll down for your assignment.

The picture makes a very bold statement about what our students can expect that technology usage will be like in the future.

Answer the following questions in complete sentences:

1.  What was your first reaction when you saw the picture?
2.  Do you believe that the statement is true?  Explain why or why not.
3.  Does the picture show a negative or positive image of what the future holds for our students using technology? Explain why or why not.

Remember, you will be graded per the blogging rubric found under the class documents.

See more examples of Hitler's Propaganda posters under "Videos, Links and Web Pages"

Hitler relied on propaganda in order to get his word out about what he thought the Germans should believe.  He saturated society with images and captions telling how the Jewish  people were bad and responsible for the downfall of Germany.  He also used propaganda to influence Germans to enlist in his armies and later to demand participation by all, including children, in working to gain world dominance and be able to build his "perfect race."

Provide the answer to the first question and any other two questions posed. This is a parent posting week.  Please post thoughtfully with a parent or other trusted adult.  You will post your response first and will then post your parent response.  Please ask if you have any questions.

What is propaganda?
What types of modern day examples of propaganda can you cite?
Were you ever influenced by any of the propaganda that you saw?
What are the effects of propaganda?
Have you ever seen propaganda spread in school?
What kind of an influence do you think the book shown above had on small children?
What do you see in the picture that would teach children to hate
and fear Jewish people?
How are the Jewish people portrayed in the illustration?
What connection can you make with the three black birds and the three Jewish men?

You all need to use a sentence from the sentence variety sheet to start your paragraph with.

Holocaust Poetry

1/15/2011

There are many poems written about the Holocaust.  Carefully and thoughtfully read the one below then provide a response to the questions.

Holocaust
by Barbara Sonek

We played, we laughed, we were loved.
We were ripped from the arms of our
parents and thrown into the fire.
We were nothing more than children.
We had a future. We were going to be lawyers, rabbis, wives, teachers, mothers.
We had dreams, then we had no hope.
We were taken away in the dead of night like cattle in cars, no air to breathe smothering, crying, starving, dying.
Separated from the world to be no more.
From the ashes, hear our plea.
This atrocity to mankind can not happen again.
Remember us, for we were the children whose dreams and lives were stolen away.

In a well written 8 sentence paragraph, describe your reaction to this poem.  What did it make you think, feel or remember?  How is this similar to you?  How is it different?

FIRST HOUR ADVANCED LANGUAGE ARTS- You must also provide one analysis of the poem using a poetic device of your choice.  Make sure to clearly explain how the poetic device was used.

Remember to post your response no later than Friday, January 21, 2011!

FIRST POST!

1/7/2011

Time to start blogging!  First of all, my apologies to all who were hoping to complete their post sooner.  I  intended on updating the blog by 5 P.M. today, but as the day progressed, I developed a really bad eye infection that required immediate doctor care. I was just now able to get to the blog.  I have now updated the blog and to make it easier, I have closed all the other blogs so you won't accidently post to them.  I can't wait to see what you all have to say!  Remember to please respond thoughtfully to all topics presented. Pay close attention to grammar, punctuation and sentence structure.  Your responses must be a minimum of 8 sentences.  Happy blogging!

We learned that during the Holocaust it was estimated that 6 million Jews and 5 million others were killed under Hitler's orders.

Tell what you think about what you have learned about Hitler and the Holocaust so far.

Remember to post your response no later than Friday, January 14, 2011.  This blog response will be closed after that and you will be required to complete a written response during lunch for no credit (remember what I say about this- it is like going to work and not picking up your paycheck-it just doesn't make sense!)

Week 1 of blogging is over and we're onto week 2.  You all did a great job with your posts last week and I'm excited to read your posts for this week!  Don't forget about the guidelines when posting.  Your response must be at least 5 sentences.  Pay close attention to your spelling, grammar and sentence structure.  When entering your name put your first initial, last name and class period.  (sgamez1).  Do NOT enter your email address. Lastly, DO NOT under any circumstances take information from other places without citing your source.  Copying and pasting information found on a website or in a book is plagiarism and considered cheating.  The posts are meant to be your own personal reflection on the questions posed.  As always, if you have any questions, please ask.

Please respond thoughtfully to the following prompt:

Hitler, though obviously power hungry and unmistakably wrong in his beliefs, had many followers.  He was able to convince masses of his people that killing others for absolutely no good reason was justified.
Why do you think that so many listened to, believed and followed through on Hitler’s orders of eradicating the Jewish people from Germany, even though what they were doing was clearly wrong?

Post any of your own book recommendations here.  If you've read a book that really made an impression on you, please share it with us!  I am always in search of a good book and would love to know what you are all reading that you're enjoying.  Provide the title, author and a brief summary over the book.  Make sure you don't give away the ending though, you want others to find out for themselves what will happen.
